FULL-TIME REMOTE (US)

Senior Tax Manager

Review and Operations

We're looking for a Senior Tax Manager to own the quality and the flow of everything we deliver.
Brunner Accounting is a remote, modern CPA firm that takes the entire back office — bookkeeping, tax compliance, proactive planning, and HR — off the plates of growing business owners. You'll be the technical conscience of the firm and the leader of our production team. The Client Relationship Manager owns the client; you own the work — preparing and reviewing returns, reconciliations, and closes so every one is accurate, on time, and genuinely excellent. You'll roll up your sleeves on complex returns yourself, not just sign off on them. This is a leadership-and-craft role, not a sales role. If you love being the person others bring their hardest tax questions to, and you also love building the systems and team that make great work repeatable, keep reading.

Tax Leadership≈ 50%
  • Serve as the firm's technical tax authority — the final review and sign-off on individual and business returns.
  • Prepare complex individual and business returns yourself when the work calls for it — this is a hands-on role, not review-only.
  • Review multi-state and California returns, S-corps, partnerships, and other entity types for technical accuracy.
  • Review tax calculations, planning analyses, quarterly estimates, and pass-through entity tax calculations; identify risks and planning opportunities.
  • Perform and direct tax research; coach staff through technical issues and escalate appropriately.
People Leadership≈ 30%
  • Lead a team of six offshore bookkeeping professionals, one offshore tax professional, and one U.S.-based tax professional.
  • Develop, coach, and review the team; run performance reviews and recommend promotions, compensation changes, and staffing.
  • Create and maintain SOPs; improve processes; monitor productivity, quality, and utilization; build accountability systems.
Bookkeeping Operations Oversight≈ 20%
  • Ensure bookkeeping accuracy, completed reconciliations, and accurate month-end closes.
  • Monitor workflow and deadlines; coordinate hand-offs between the bookkeeping and tax teams so financial data is tax-ready.
Client Interaction≈ AS NEEDED%
  • This role does not own client relationships — but you should be comfortable joining client meetings, explaining technical tax issues, discussing planning strategies, and presenting conclusions in support of the Client Relationship Manager.
02 Technical Requirements
  • Individual and entity taxation.
  • California and multi-state taxation.
  • Small-business tax planning, entity-structure considerations, and quarterly estimated-tax calculations.

Trust/estate and non-profit taxation are not a focus for this role.

03 Leadership Responsibilities
  • Set and uphold the firm's technical and quality standards.
  • Build a high-trust, high-accountability team across U.S. and offshore staff.
  • Own the production workflow end-to-end and keep it predictable and on time.
  • Develop people — turn good staff into strong reviewers.
